So how\nexactly are we supposed to do this? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We all know\nthat no one really learns about empowerment by reading about it. If this were\ntrue all the self-help sections of bookstores would be secret havens for the\nmost successful people. We also know we don\u2019t become automatically empowered\nbecause we hear an amazing speaker that inspires us for a couple of hours. So\nwhy do we keep on doing the same things expecting an enlightening moment to hit\nus, take over our bodies and suddenly become unstoppable?<\/em><\/strong> Because it is\nthe easy thing to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Empowerment\nis defined in the dictionary as the measures designed to increase the degree\nof autonomy and self-determination in people and in communities in order to\nenable them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined\nway, acting on their own authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I define empowerment as discipline. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to make the hard decisions<\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to work day and day out<\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to take on the responsibility no one wants to take<\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to learn<\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to show up <\/p>\n\n\n\n Sound less sexy?\nFor sure. Is it real? Absolutely. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I had the\ngreat privilege of mentoring 10 startups over a 5 day period during the month\nAugust. They all have hopes of becoming the\nnext best medical startup in the country, maybe even go global one day.\nImpossible? Not at all although the medical field presents challenges not all\nstartups have, such as special FDA and other government requirements. My\nbiggest advice over the 5 days I spent with these amazing minds: Make a plan,\nexecute, measure, revise, repeat. The latter is worthless without discipline. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A startup\ntakes discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to\nmake a plan, <\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to\nexecute it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to\nmeasure its results, <\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to\nrevise it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n Discipline to\nrepeat this exercise over and over again<\/p>\n\n\n\n What most\npeople don\u2019t understand is that discipline grants you enormous freedom. <\/em><\/strong>Freedom to be your own boss. Freedom to make\nyour own mistakes. Freedom to make your own achievements. Freedom to learn.\nFreedom to grow. Freedom to change the rules. Freedom to make a change. Freedom\nto be you. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Empowerment\nis not about magically feeling inspired.<\/em><\/strong> To be truly empowered you must be disciplined\nenough to show up, day in and day out, make the tough choices, fail, get dirty,\nget up and do it all over again.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" One of the most celebrate phrases we hear now a days is: Empower others!
